Militant groups had killed five policemen and a hospital worker in the southern city of Bani Walid, according to the official SPA news agency.
Militants fired mortar shells at Bani Walid on Thursday, killing three policemen and hospital worker Seddiq al-Mahdi, according to the information from security sources. The authorities also said one militant was killed in Bani Walid.
Two doctors and two nurses were also killed, the official news agency SPA said, adding that four soldiers and three hospital workers died in the Bani Walid raid on Wednesday.
A civilian killed in the Bani Walid attack was later named by an army commander as the suspected suicide bomber.
There were fears that militants might stage another assault to reopen a long-barred border area that had been largely closed since early July because of clashes between tribes, government soldiers and rebels.
Security forces said the Bani Walid attack was among a series of attacks across the country.
An Iraqi government source said in Baghdad that an explosion at a checkpoint between Iraq and Syria on Wednesday killed eight soldiers and wounded 30 others in central Iraq.
There was no immediate confirmation of the attack.
